Multi Data Types (MDT) in EventON is a powerful, built-in feature that allows event organizers to create reusable, customizable data sets using WordPress taxonomies. Think of MDT as a flexible system for storing and displaying structured information that can be assigned to multiple events without duplication. Out of the box, you can activate up to 3 MDT types (expandable via filters if needed), each with a name, description, optional image, and up to 3 additional custom fields (text-based by default).

The beauty of MDT is its simplicity—no coding or addons required! Configure everything through EventON’s settings panel (under EventON > Settings > Categories). Rename MDT types (e.g., “MDT 1” to “Sponsors”), enable images or extra fields, and assign them to events via the event edit screen. On the frontend, MDT data appears in event cards as styled sections with headings, subtitles, images, and details.

MDT promotes data reuse: Create a sponsor profile once, update it centrally, and it reflects across all assigned events. This opens doors to creative event management, enhancing organization, engagement, and professionalism without extra tools.

Creative Ways to Use MDT

Here are various practical and innovative applications for MDT. Each example includes setup steps and benefits, showing how event organizers can adapt it to their needs.

1. Event Sponsors

• Creative Use: Display sponsor tiers (e.g., Gold, Silver) with logos, bios, and links. Reuse profiles for annual events or series.
• How to Set Up:
  1. In EventON Settings > Multi Data Types, enable MDT 1 and rename it to “Sponsors”.
  2. Enable the image field for logos.
  3. Add additional fields: Field 1 as “Sponsorship Level” (text for “Gold/Silver”), Field 2 as “Website URL” (text for links), Field 3 as “Contact Email”.
  4. In the Sponsors taxonomy screen (Events > Sponsors), add terms like “Company X” with a description (bio), image (logo), and fill the fields.
  5. In an event’s edit screen, assign sponsors via the MDT metabox and add a subtitle like “Our Valued Partners”.

2. Event Vendors or Exhibitors

  1. Enable MDT 2 and rename to “Vendors”.

  4. Add vendor terms in the taxonomy screen with descriptions and fields.
  5. Assign to events and use a subtitle like “Meet Our Vendors”.

1. Set the ending time past 12:00 am
2. Enable “Hide end time from Calendar”
3. Enable “Span the event until hidden end time”

This will make sure your events that goes beyond midnight are not displayed twice on the calendar.

Location archive page look by default

Customizing the template

Create a folder called eventon inside your current active theme. So that the path to the folder would look like.. …/wp-content/themes/–your-theme–/eventon/

Go to eventon/templates/ folder and copy the file taxonomy-event_location.php

Paste this file into the eventon folder you created inside your theme folder.

From now on the location archive page will use the template from your theme folder. Any changes you made to the template file inside theme folder will reflect on location archive page.

Changing shortcode

If you look at the template file using a text editor you can see the shortcode used to show events from this location. You can further customize this by adding other shortcode parameters that are compatible with calendar type. (Learn how to use shortcode generator)

Organizer Archive page

The same method can be used for customizing event organizer archive page as well.

Eventon events archive page (../events) is auto generated when the plugin is installed. You can easily customize this page.

Step 2: Select eventon settings

Go to myEventon> Settings > Events Paging

Select the events page from drop down of the all pages in your site. This will be the page you want to use for /events page. What ever content you write on this page will show on /events page afterwards.

By default this should be set to Events page (which is auto generated when you install eventon)

The idea behind is, after you select this page, you can go to Pages >All Pages and click on this page and type whatever content you want and that will show on the events archive page.

Next select the page template you want to use from the drop down of available templates in your theme.

Step 3: Customizing the page template

In a similar way as mentioned above if you want to create a full customization template for this you can do so and upload that to your theme directory and then select that template (in a similar way as above) to use for the events page.

## Customizing Default EventON Event Template

If you select events (archive) page template to be default eventon template, but the layout is not what you desire please follow below steps to correct the eventon template.

NOTE: You will need experience using an FTP client like FileZilla.

Step 1: Grab correct template page

Using FTP client navigate to your theme folder and find the template you want to use for eventON events page template. Usually this is the page.php file.

Open this file in a text editor.

Step 2: Copy eventON template file to your theme

In your current active theme folder create a new folder called : eventon – the new folder path should be like below: …./wp-content/themes/–theme-name—/eventon/

From your eventON folder within FTP. navigate to …/wp-content/plugins/eventON/templates/ and look for a file named: archive-ajde_events.php

Copy this file into the eventon folder created earlier.

Step 3: Place Code

The default event archive page content will look like this.

get_header();

EVO()->archive_page();
	
get_footer();

The event content for the page is pulled in the EVO()->archive_page(); function.

Copy the code from page.php or a similar file on step 1 and paste it in archive-ajde_events.php

Copy the eventON archive page code “EVO()->archive_page();” and place it where there is call for wp loop such below or where page content goes.

	get_template_part( 'partials/page-single-layout' );

endwhile; ?>

That should do the trick refresh page and clear cache to see results.

Optional Step 4: Archive Page Pluggable Filters

In eventON 2.9.2 we have added 2 new pluggable functions to archive page that will allow you to add content before and after the archive page content is displayed.

Those pluggable functions are :

do_action('evo_event_archive_page_before_content');

and

do_action('evo_event_archive_page_after_content');

Step 1:

Identify the language code associated in each language in WPML eg. ‘en’, ‘es’, ‘fr’, ‘ de’

Step 2:

Go into EventON > Language and select a language and type in correct language text for matching WPML language.

Eg. if you are using L1 in eventon as WPML first language (english) then you should write english translations in EventON L1. If EventON L2 is for WPML 2nd language (Spanish), then your eventON L2 must be in spanish and so forth.

Step 3:

Create the shortcode variables.

Example:

If Language #1 is French and language code for WPML for this is “fr”, your shortcode variable will look like wpml_l1=”fr”

Step 4:

Similar to above step, create other shortcode variables for other language you are using in association with wpml in eventON language.

Example: If Language #2 is Spanish, and language code in WPML is “es” then the shortcode variables to add is wpml_l2=”es”

Your end shortcode should look something like below:

[add_eventon wpml_l1="fr" wpml_l2="es"]

Further Customization

If you wish you add support for more than 3 wpml language please use pluggable filter below to add those additional language values. – place this code in your theme functions.php file.

Now make sure there is a Events Page ID set, if not select from the drop down list.

If you do NOT see the events page in this drop down list, try this.

Go to Pages and find the ID of the events page. eg. 56

in the url of your site type options.php (after wp-admin/) and press enter your url should look like below

In this look for “eventon_events_page_id” and change this to the ID of the events page eg. 56

and press Enter

That should update the events page template.

Step 1:

Open inspector in chrome or safari or even firefox. In windows it is F12 for chrome, Mac = Command + Alt+i

This should open a window like this below your website. Pay attention to the magnifying glass icon. Click on this and then you can move your mouse over the web page and over the calendar and select each individual element (that you want to change)

Step 2:

Click on an element you want to edit within the page in the calendar. In the above example we want to edit the event times on calendar event row. Now look on the right side pane.

Copy this CSS elements name class structure. In this example it would be:

.ajde_evcal_calendar.evoDV #evcal_list .evcal_cblock .evo_time

This is the CSS class names that we can use to apply new styles to change styles ONLY to event time HTML element (in this case). In a similar way you can find the previously applied styles to one single HTML element of the calendar you want to change.

Step 3:

Now go to myEventon> Styles page and paste this CSS class string you copied for the element you want to edit from the inspector.

In here I have added {display:none} at the end which will hide the end times. Click Save changes to apply these new CSS override. Clear your cache and you should see this take effect on front end.

Troubleshooting

If the styles you write doesn’t make any change on front-end:

Solution #1: Clear cache on your browser and website

Solution #2: the class name for the element you are trying to change styles may not be strong enough to override existing styles. What you need to do is before the class name of the element include class names and ids of parents of the element.

In this above image — if we want to style evcal_location element, but the CSS class name is not strong enough to override by itself I would use something like below.

#evcal_list .eventon_list_event .evcal_list_a .evcal_desc em.evcal_location{background-color:#3d3d3d;}

If that doesn’t override the styles you are trying to change, use !important  after the style property such as :

#evcal_list .eventon_list_event .evcal_list_a .evcal_desc em.evcal_location{background-color:#3d3d3d!important;}

Doing this yourself

Once you get a hold of how to find the correct CSS class names for an individual element in the eventon calendar it is really easy to use this to alter the eventON calendar to the exact way you want it to be.

Commonly used CSS styles:

element-class-name-here{font-size:13px;}

element-class-name-here{height:140px;}

element-class-name-here{width:200px;}

To change background color to hex color #3d3d3d

.event_description .bordb, #evcal_list{background-color:#3d3d3d}

To change font color:

.evodv_current_day p.evodv_daynum b{color:#3d3d3d;}

Adjust Position of popups

.evo_popin{margin-top:100px;}

Change font style from italic > normal

#evcal_list .eventon_list_event .evcal_desc em{font-style:normal}

To hide month name in eventTop

STEP 1: Go to Events > Event Type 1 from wp-admin

STEP 2: You should see color circle where you can select color for a new event type tag

OR if you click on already existing event type category tags you should see a color circle to change the color.

STEP 3: Click on this and change the color and save changes.

STEP 4: Assign the event type term to the event

Next you want to make sure this event type term “Regular Events” is assigned to event(s) which you can do from event edit page under “Event Type1 Categories” dialog box.

ScreenshotSTEP 5: In eventON shortcode generator set “yes” to Event type color override or add the text etc_override=”yes” into your shortcode.

Click save and you should see your calendar event colors being overridden by event type colors.

IMPORTANT: 

To get the event type color to override event’s color, you have to make sure that the event itself has this custom colored event type category term is indeed assigned to the event just like mentioned in step 4.
