Step 1: Setting Up Your Google Maps API Key

EventON uses Google Maps for location mapping, so an API key is required for maps to display correctly. Without it, maps may appear grayed out or not load.

1. Get Your API Key:
   • Go to the Google Maps Platform.
   • Create a Google Cloud project if you don’t have one.
   • Enable the Maps JavaScript API in your project.
   • Generate an API key from the Credentials page (restrict it to your domain for security).
   • Note: You may need to set up billing, but Google offers a free tier for low usage.
2. Enter the API Key in EventON:
   • In your WordPress dashboard, go to EventON > Settings > Google Maps API.
   • Paste your API key into the Google Maps API Key (Required) field.
   • Optional: Toggle Disable Google Maps API if you don’t want maps loading (but enable for locations).
   • Click Save Changes.

Tip: If maps don’t load after saving, check for errors in your browser console or verify the key in Why is Location Google Map Grayed Out?. You can also customize map styles (e.g., Roadmap, Satellite) here.

Step 2: Adding a Location to an Event

Locations are added in the event editor and can be new or reused from saved ones.

1. Open the Event Editor:
   • Go to Events > All Events and click Edit on an existing event (or Add New).
2. Navigate to Location Section:
   • In the Main Event Details metabox (usually in the sidebar or below the editor), scroll to the Location tab.
3. Add or Select a Location:
   • New Location: Click Add New.

• Enter the Location Name (e.g., “Conference Center”) and Address (full street address for accurate mapping).
• Add optional details: Latitude/Longitude (leave blank for auto-population), Location Image (upload via + button), Link for Location (e.g., venue website), Related Locations, and Location Type (e.g., venue, online).
• Click Save—if the Google Maps API is set, lat/lng will auto-populate using the address.
• Existing Location: Search and select from saved locations. Edit if needed (changes apply globally).

Note: When editing a saved location, a Generate Location Coordinates button appears next to Save Changes to refresh lat/lng if the address changes.

Step 3: Enabling Google Maps for the Event

To display a map in the event card:

1. In the Location section, check the Generate Google Map option (under Location Options).
2. Optional: Enable Location Image, Hide Location Name, or Location Info over Location Image for custom display.

Step 4: Setting Default Options in EventON Settings

To make “Generate Google Map” checked by default for all new events:

1. Go to EventON > Settings > Location.
2. Look for the Enable generate google maps from address for all newly created events, by default.
3. Enable the option to auto-check Generate Google Map for locations.
4. Save changes.

This saves time when creating multiple events.

Step 5: Ensuring Location Displays in Event Cards

Locations won’t show until added to the event card layout:

1. Go to EventON > Settings > EventCard > EventCard Designer.
2. Drag the Location fields (Location, Location Image, Google Maps, Get Directions) into your layout (e.g., below description).
3. Save changes.

Step 6: Verifying Locations on the Calendar

1. Publish or update your event.
2. Add or view a calendar on a page using a shortcode like [add_eventon] (see Adding Calendar to Your Site).
3. On the frontend, click an event to expand the card—check for the address, map (if enabled), and image.
4. Test interactions: Click the map for zoom/directions (requires API key).
5. On mobile, ensure responsiveness.

Main Monthly Calendar (Default with Event Tops)

The core monthly view shows one month of events as compact “event tops” (rows) that expand into event cards on click. This is your basic calendar upgraded with more options for filtering, layout, and interaction.

How to Modify from Basic:

• Edit your existing [add_eventon] shortcode.
• Add parameters for customization (e.g., limit events or add tiles).
• Use the Shortcode Generator: Select “Main Calendar” as the type, then tweak options like navigation or images.

What You’ll Achieve:

Step 1: Install and Activate EventON

1. Download EventON:
   • Log in to your myEventON account and download the plugin ZIP file.
2. Upload to WordPress:
   • In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.
   • Select the ZIP file and click Install Now.
3. Activate and License:
   • Click Activate Plugin.
   • Go to EventON > Addons & License, Click Activate, enter your license key (from your account) and email address, and click Activate.

Step 2: Configure Basic Settings

1. Navigate to EventON > Settings in your dashboard.
2. Time Settings Tab:
   • Set your Default Time Zone under General Time/Date Settings (e.g., America/New_York).
   • Set it to Apply default timezone to all events.
3. Location Tab:
   • Get and add Google maps API Key.
   • Set Google starting zoom level for the map. (e.g., 18 – see few road, 7 – see most of the country)
   • Enable Enable generate google maps from address for all newly created events, by default — this will enable google maps for new events by default.
4. EventTop Tab:
   • From EventTop Designer adjust and update desired eventTop layout. See EventTop Designer.
5. EventCard Tab:
   • Open EventCard Designer and configure the event card data layout and design. See EventCard Designer.
6. Single Events Tab:
   • Set single event page, eventTop design under Single Event Page > Select eventTop Style. (e.g., Immersive Flow, Colorful, or Clean White).
   • Under Shareable Options enable social media channels for use.
7. (Optional) Categories Tab:
   • Re-name Event Type and Event Type 2 category (taxonomy) names from generic to custom names. (e.g., Genre or Style)
8. Click Save Changes.

Step 3: Create Your First Event

1. Go to Events > Add New in the WordPress sidebar.
2. Add Basic Info:
   • Title: Enter “Sample Event: Welcome Party”.
   • Description: Use the Gutenberg editor to add details (e.g., “Join us for a fun evening!”). Add images or links if desired.
3. Event Details (metabox):
   • Set Start Date/Time (e.g., tomorrow, 7:00 PM).

Repeat Types

The repeating feature for an event allows you to repeat an event with several possible variations.

Daily Repeats

Daily repeats allow you to set a repeating days gap and the maximum number of repeats for this event.

Hourly Repeats

This option allows configuring an hourly schedule to repeat your event within the same day. You can set the hours between each repeat and the maximum number of repeats.

Weekly Repeats

With weekly repeats, you can select a repeat mode of Single day — which will repeat only one day of the week based on the event date. Or Days of the week — where you can select each day of the week you want the event to repeat weekly.

Monthly Repeats

Monthly repeats offers two different modes of repeats as well as weekly repeat. Day of the month(repeat based on event day of the month, with the set gap between repeats).

Day of the week(allows you to select which day of the week in each month to have the event repeat. E.g. First Friday of the month or the Last Sunday of the month).

Yearly Repeat

Yearly repeats allow you to configure yearly events; you can configure the gap(number of years between each event) and the maximum number of occurrences.

Custom Repeats

Custom repeat allows you to add custom event dates (start and end) where you want the event to repeat.

You can also enable the option to show repeating instances of the event on the main event on the front end. Once this option is enabled, you can also configure the following settings:

• Show end time of repeating instances as well on event card
• Allow repeat dates to be clickable
• Show current instance relative to other repeats

PRO TIP: You can start by creating hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly repeats, save changes and switch the repeat type to custom. This will make it possible to customize the schedule and remove certain dates you’d like to be excluded.

How to Access the Shortcode Generator

Access SG directly from the WordPress editor or settings:

In Page/Post Editor (Classic Editor):

• Go to Pages > Add New (or edit an existing page).
• Next to the Add Media button, click the Add EventON Shortcode button (it looks like a calendar icon).

In Gutenberg Editor:

• Click + add a block on the page. This will open block browser.
• Type EventON in the top search bar. You should see EventON block.
• Click the EventON Block to add it to the page.

Once added to WP Block editor, EventON Block will appear like below. Clicking on Calendar Generator button will open the shortcode generator.

From EventON Settings (Version 2.2.20 and later):

• Navigate to EventON > Settings > Shortcodes.
• Click Configure Calendar to open shortcode generator and create shortcode.

How to Use the Shortcode Generator

Clicking appropriate EventON Shortcode Generator button— a lightbox popup appears.

Select a Calendar Type (Level 1 options, e.g., “Main Calendar” or “Event Lists”).

• The panel slides to reveal Level 2 options for that type.

Customize using the interactive panel:

• Toggle features like month navigation, event counts, or filters (e.g., show_et_ft_img=”yes” to display featured images).
• If addons are active, additional options appear (e.g., RSVP buttons).
• The shortcode preview at the bottom updates in real-time.

Once ready:

• Click the button (bottom right) to apply the shortcode.
• Alternatively, you can click Copy button to copy the shortcode and paste in where you like.

Insert via editor: Displays a calendar with images, limited to 5 events, hiding past ones.

1. Scroll to the Main Event Details section (metabox).
2. From Time & Date side menu item, set Start Date/Time and End Date/Time using the calendars.
   • Note: Always select an end date— if omitted, EventON defaults to the start date, which may cause display issues for multi-day events.
3. You can select your desired Event Timezone here.
4. Under Event Time Extended Type you can select, if the event will be full day long, month long, or year long. — this will override the event date/time from above.
5. For repeat events – Click Repeat Event and fill in repeat event data.

Enter a complete URL e.g., http://test.com — of a link you want to add as Learn More. Learn more data must also be enabled from EventCard via EventCard Designer.

Step 9: Setting Related Events

This allows you to show other related events, to the current event on event page and eventCard. Related Events data must be enabled via EventCard Designer.

Configuring Related Events

• Configure button will open a lightbox with other events found in your website. You can search among the list by typing event names in the Search Field.
• Click on desired related event, a check mark will appear to indicate selection.
• Save Changes once complete with related event selection.

Optional Extra SEO

These are optional data that will supply relevant Schema data on the event page. Sometimes, missing this data will throw notices when validating event SEO.

Step 10: Adding Event Types (Optional)

1. In Event Type and Event Type 2 fields, select or create tags (e.g., “Workshop” or “Virtual”).

These taxonomy tags enable filtering on calendars (e.g., show only “Conferences”).

Step 11: Choosing an Event Color

1. In Event Color (on the sidebar), click the color box.
2. For your first event, click the top swatch to open the picker and select a hex code (e.g., #FF5733 for orange).
3. Save—it’ll appear as a preset for future events.
4. (Optional) Click Set Gradient Colors to create dramatic gradient color effects.

Colors tint the event on calendars and cards for visual categorization.
