Guide to Reverting to an Older Version of EventON

Last Updated: October 21, 2025

If you’re experiencing issues with the latest version of EventON (e.g., compatibility problems with your theme or other plugins), reverting to an older version can be a temporary solution while troubleshooting. We always recommend using the most recent version for security, performance, and new features, but this guide provides safe steps to downgrade. Reverting involves restoring from a backup or requesting an older version from support.

Important Warning: Downgrading can lead to data loss if not done carefully—always back up your site first. Older versions may lack bug fixes or compatibility with current WordPress. Contact support before downgrading to confirm if it’s necessary.

Prerequisites:

  • Full site backup (database and files) using tools like UpdraftPlus, BackWPup, or your host’s backup system.
  • WordPress admin access and FTP credentials (if manual method).
  • EventON license key for reactivation.
  • Knowledge of your current EventON version (check via Plugins > Installed Plugins).

For general setup help, see our Quick Starter Guide. If you’re new to EventON, start with the Installation Guide.

Method 1: Restore from a Backup (Recommended if Available)

If you backed up your site before updating EventON, this is the fastest and safest way to revert.

  1. Access Your Backup:
    • Log in to your backup plugin (e.g., UpdraftPlus) or host’s control panel.
    • Select a backup from before the EventON update (check dates and notes).
  2. Restore the Site:
    • Choose to restore plugins and database (EventON data is stored here).
    • Follow the restore instructions from your webhost—exclude unrelated files if possible to speed up.
    • Confirm the restore; your site may go into maintenance mode briefly.
  3. Verify the Revert:
    • Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins and check the EventON version.
    • Test your calendars and events to ensure everything works.

Tip: Always create a new backup before restoring. If using a host like SiteGround, use their built-in staging tools to test the revert without affecting your live site.

Note: This method reverts your entire site, not just EventON. If you only need to downgrade the plugin, use Method 2.

Method 2: Manually Downgrade EventON (Request Older Version from Support)

If you don’t have a pre-update backup, request an older version from our support team and install it manually.

  1. Request the Older Version:
    • Email support at support@myeventon.com or submit a ticket with:
      • Your license key.
      • The specific version you want (e.g., “EventON 4.5.2”).
      • A brief reason for the request (helps us assist better).
    • We’ll send you a link to download ZIP file (e.g., eventon-4.5.2.zip) via email or in the ticket, usually within 24-48 hours.
  2. Disable “Delete eventon settings & data when EventON is uninstalled”
    • In EventON Settings > General make sure this option is Off — otherwise all your eventON data will be deleted when eventON is deactivated.
  3. Deactivate and Remove Current Version:
    • In WordPress, go to Plugins > Installed Plugins.
    • Deactivate EventON (this preserves your data).
    • Click Delete—confirm, but note: This removes files, not database data (events, settings).
  4. Upload and Install the Older Version:
    • Use the automatic method (preferred):
      • Go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.
      • Select the older ZIP file and click Install Now.
    • Or manual (via FTP):
      • Unzip the file to get the eventon folder.
      • Upload to wp-content/plugins/ via FTP (overwrite if needed).
    • Activate the plugin.
  5. Reactivate Your License:
    • Go to EventON > License, enter your key & email, and activate.

Warning: Downgrading without a backup risks data incompatibility (e.g., new features in database). Test on a staging site first. If events disappear, restore from backup.

Step 3: Verify and Test the Reverted Version

  1. Check the version in Plugins > Installed Plugins.
  2. Visit EventON > Settings to confirm options load.
  3. Test frontend: View a calendar page (e.g., via [add_eventon]) and check events display correctly.
  4. Clear cache (browser and plugins like WP Rocket) to see changes.

If issues persist, it may not be version-related—see All Events Not Showing.

Troubleshooting

  • Activation Fails? Ensure your license is valid for the version—contact support.
  • Data Loss? Restore from backup immediately. Older versions may not support new data structures.
  • Conflicts? Deactivate other plugins one by one to isolate issues.
  • No Email Response? Check spam folder or use the ticket system for faster tracking.
